    Lokki

    Maija Isola, 1961

The idea for the Lokki (seagull) pattern came to Maija Isola when she was looking at a window with a curtain drawn across it. The sun was shining, and the wide folds of the curtain formed wavy shadows on the fabric. Maija had a sudden inspiration: if a fabric is printed with waves, even a small piece of such fabric appears abundant, richly folded.

Artek + Marimekko. The art of printmaking meets the technology of wood bending.

Celebrating Artek’s 90th anniversary, Stool 60 Lokki unites two iconic Finnish designs: Alvar Aalto’s famous 1933 “L-leg” stool and Maija Isola’s Lokki pattern, presented using marquetry on the stool’s birch veneer seat top. The contrasting wood grains create a shimmering effect, brought to life through the interaction between light, pattern and wood.

Part of the limited-edition Artek + Marimekko collection, this stool is made from Finnish birch at Artek’s Turku factory in south-western Finland.

The direction of the surface veneer varies due to the production process, which means the pattern may appear either as a positive or a negative. This is an essential characteristic of the product and its craftsmanship.
